France arrests more suspected Muslim extremists

Another day has brought another crackdown on suspected Islamists in France where police have detained at least 10 people in early-morning raids.
Elite commandos swooped from Roubaix near the Belgian border to Marseille in the south.
Fears of radical Islam have gripped France since last month’s shootings in Toulouse.
There is no link between those killings and today’s arrests nationwide. However individuals suspected of being isolated and self-radicalised, a profile like that of gunman Mohamed Merah, were targeted, according to a police source.
In a separate investigation, 19 suspected Muslim extremists were arrested last Friday, 13 of whom are now facing terrorism charges.
President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed to root out any form of militancy after last month’s killings of three Jewish children, a rabbi and three soldiers.
With France due to vote in a presidential poll, critics accuse him of capitalising on the Islamist threat for electoral purposes.
